When Asked "What Company You Are With"

I think you need a name. Some people probably don't care if you have one or not. But when I do business with someone, I just like them to sound official...maybe that's just me.

But, even with a name, if you use something like First Name Last Name Insurance Services and identify yourself by your first and last name, it's not as if that sheds a whole lot of light on the subject for people who what to know who you represent.

You might say something like, 'This is (First Name, Last Name) calling from First Name Last Name Insurance Services here in _______ (whatever town your agency is located in). I represent a number of different companies, such as, (use the ones with the most name recognition and best reputation in your area assuming you do represent them :1wink:) with the goal of finding the best solution for my clients.'.

Alternatively, if you don't want to come up with a name, just identify yourself and go from 'I represent...'. If they still want to know who you represent (I have actually had that happen) ,hit the high points. You are a local licensed agent who has knowledge about several companies and you offer products from these companies. This allows you to compare and contrast the different companies for individual situations so as to do the best thing for the client as opposed to representing one company with no other, or very limited, options.

I have had the question asked "what company are you with" several times and I really haven't had a good answer for them, at least what I thought was the best answer I could give a prospect and it is mainly because I am an independent agent and not really associated with any agency or one single carrier. I guess the 'best' answer I could give them would be an agency name IMO but I dunno.

I usually respond with "I'm an independent agent and I represent several companies. This allows me the freedom and flexibility to offer what I think are the best products and together we can make intelligent decisions without being locked into one company or one choice." I have thought about then asking the prospect right then, "do you like the idea of having choices"? (I imagine they would say yes in which I can start moving forward also giving me control of the conversation).

Anyway, I still seem to get folks who insist upon knowing what company I am with, usually it is some secretary/gate keeper who is probably writing on a message paper. Sometimes it is someone I'm calling because I was referred to them and they were told I would be calling.

So having no company name or agency name I sorta feel this is a problem perhaps. I also do not have a website. I'm not looking for any "because that is the feeling I'm having I'm conscientiously projecting this image" stuff either. Another words because I believe it to be true it is. This is actually a problem and I see it becoming a bigger one when I start prospecting to a greater extent.

So is anyone else running into this? Did anyone solve this by implementing a company name or adding a website? Maybe I'm just :goofy:

One guy I know has an agency name on some fliers he made up and I asked him about it. He said he just made it up, that he didn't actually have an agency name.

What is this hard if ur calling about health in just name blue cross and another company. I'd P&C name gmac or progressive ur still an agent for them. Not a secret. If life say u use prudential or met life. They just want to know who u use.

I also have sent a cut and paste of all my appointments with a link to the DOI.........

Short and sweet for a gatekeeper.

Exactly. I have been helping another agent who calls businesses. Twice, maybe trhee times, I was asked what company I was with. I'm like x, y, z (any effin co. you want I'll get it sorta response) and I get "and what firm are you with" B.S. I was calling in regards for requested quotes and needing to speak to the HR person (I had the contact name).

Funny thing is, lately I have had a few people of my own want to know what firm or co. I am with. Like people think for some reason everybody went back to work for someone instead of working for themselves. :goofy:

Like I said, when I call on my regular list (there is like 8,000 people on that list) I just say which carrier I am with because the regular list expects you to either represent one of a handful of carriers and they are used to agents calling. It is the branching out that has caused me some glitches. I'll figure it out though even if I have to make up some BS name if that is what makes them happy! :1arghh:

I'll just say I'm with Orange. "Orange who"? Orange you glad I called?......now get me HR!!!!

dude really......the response is " I am licensed with all the company's that have the best rate's....I work for you and not any one company and I do not get paid until you get the best rate for your situation so thats why I have to offer everyone that is going to give you the best underwriting and rate.......so let me get some information to see what company is going to give you the best rate......."

That is a good answer.

Don't over think this.

"I'm an independent agent with Joe's Pizza and Insurance Services" (your agency name, or your name followed by Insurance Services). We represent all major insurance carriers, such as Anthem Blue Cross, HealthNet, Aetna, Kaiser (or whatever).

You are your company. You represent you (in this context). Be proud of that. Say it like you are proud of it and be happy!

Dan

I like this answer too.
