I'll try to keep this short as I can, forgive me if it seems long- I got appointed with a Medicare carrier. Received my agent writing number and access to the broker portal where I can access product quotes and enroll beneficiaries. I wrote a Med Supp for them, everything went great, the contract was approved and in my broker portal it shows "approved". Almost a month later,
I write another Med Supp for them. Again, everything goes great, contract is approved, and it shows in my broker portal "approved". Several weeks go by and I began to wonder where my commission was. I called them up- "Sorry, but you're only appointed to sell our Med Advantage not our Med Supp so we're not going to pay you commissions". Um, what? I had absolutely no idea that a separate appointment was required, no one mentioned this ever, and with all the other carriers that offer both Med Adv & Med Supp, I was never required to get 2 separate appointments. And why the hell would they accept these contracts and never say a word to me? They just took the contracts and made me think all was good and didn't even bother to notify me that I wasn't appointed and thus wouldn't be paid? If you can offer some advice, I'd really appreciate it.

I'd get appointed before I sold any more!!!

Advantage plans tend to be in their own little world. Its your up-lines fault if you have one for not explaining your options.

I've had appointments with one FMO for MA and a different FMO for med Supp

Completely different department many times located in different states

Don't some carriers use a separate insurance company for MA vs Medigap? Especially carriers like Continental Life, American Continental, Aetna Health and Life, Aetna Health Insurance . . . .

Thanks for the replies. The insurer is one of the "Big" ones, they do not use a separate insurance company for their Med Supps. It seems more like they have different departments within the same company or something. Anyhow, requiring 2 appointments is fine with me, whatever- it I would have known, I would have happily complied. What I don't appreciate is the insurance company not letting me know (especially by the second app) that hey, by the way, you're not contracted with us for this product. I can tell you one thing, if they don't offer to pay me once I'm appointed for the other side of their biz or whatever, I will NEVER write anything for them again. There are plenty of other Med Supp companies with competitive. I just don't think it was right of them to let me go on writing business without even mentioning it. I'm sure they realize that agents don't like writing business they aren't going to get paid for. They even contacted me to obtain copies of documents from the prospect to complete the enrollment! I did all that footwork for them and they can't even mention that I'm not appointed? Also, why would you give someone access to selling a product in the Agent portal that they can't sell? Nowhere anywhere does it say that they are separate entities or whatever. Sorry to rant but dang, it just doesn't seem right if they don't pay me.

If you have a relationship with the carrier rep they MIGHT retroactively appoint you for selling Medigap. If you work with an IMO for this carrier, lean on them to get your retro appointment.

While there is not much money to the rep or IMO for 2 cases, they DO get paid on your production. If they don't want to do if for the $$ they should for the good will.

Has to be United Healthcare.

My vote was for Amana. They did that to me a few years ago in some U65 health products.

Before UHC bought Golden Rule life was simple. Wrote a fair amount of GR plans. Made money. No hassles.

Thats just another reason to stay away from govt red tape programs like MAPD. Just so u know every year u will be mandated to pass a AHIP training just to keep ur renewals. These carriers can change things as they please too. Humana just took a hatchet to commissions
