Ohio National Financial Services recently announced that Barbara A. Turner, CRCP, its president and chief operating officer, was honored with its prestigious 2018 Paul E. Martin Community Service award in recognition of her exceptional generosity and community service.

Cincinnati-based Ohio National established the award in 1979 to honor financial professionals and home office associates who give unselfishly of their time and talent to aid their communities.

The award is named for former Ohio National Chairman and CEO Paul E. Martin, who was a prime example of community involvement and corporate leadership. During his 33 years with Ohio National, his interests extended outward from the insurance industry to the community as a whole. The selection process occurred in 2018 for the current award and recipients were presented with it in the first quarter of 2019.

Turner focuses much of her community service efforts on helping single mothers, children and those facing struggles to thrive as demonstrated with her involvement with 4C for Children and the Women’s Fund of the Greater Cincinnati Foundation. She is also the 2019 chair of the citywide 2019 Cincinnati Go Red for Women campaign.

This work is in addition to being on the boards of the Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park, Cincinnati State and Technical College, Cincinnati Women’s Executive Forum, Greater Cincinnati American Red Cross, Northern Kentucky University Foundation and the Women’s Fund of the Greater Cincinnati Foundation as well as serving as a member of the Cincinnati Regional Business Committee (CRBC).

“Barbara has made an exceptional impact in the community. From serving on numerous boards to mentoring countless colleagues and friends, she is known as someone who leads by example. When she commits to an organization or cause, she does so to make a difference,” said Gary T. “Doc” Huffman, Ohio National chairman and chief executive officer.

Turner is known for her passion for mentoring at-risk teenage girls and single moms. She strives to help women and children find ways to achieve self-sufficiency and financial independence. Additionally, she has mentored more than 50 Ohio National associates to help them gain leadership skills. She was the founding member of the Ohio National Women’s Network (OWN), which gives female associates a community to support one another and thrive in their careers.

By receiving this award, Turner can select a charity to receive $2,500 from The Ohio National Foundation. Turner selected the Women’s Fund of Greater Cincinnati and 4C for Children to receive $1,250 each.

“I’m truly honored to be recognized for doing something that comes easy and natural for me, giving back to my community,” she said. “I’m blessed to have a vocation that allows me to make a difference in the lives of others by helping them achieve self-sufficiency through financial education, independence and security.”

Ian B. Meierdiercks, an Ohio National producing general agent in Blue Bell, Pa., was honored as the field recipient of the Paul E. Martin award.
