BACON IS FOR CLOSERS...

Being overweight sucks. It destroys your mood. Your energy level. Your ability to ride rides at the theme park. Ive been there. This thread is a great idea because a lot of people fail because they do not have support.
I know, I see some of the people on a plane and I wonder how they can squeeze into those seats...even with 2 seats. They need the Jaws of Life to get them out. I noticed at the Doctor's office yesterday that they have several double wides...double wide chairs for the Biggins. Did you see what I did there Dude?

Since this is now the thread for dieting and giving hope to those wanting to lose weight, I've lost 10 pounds in 9 days on DT's Bacon Diet. Thanks DT!!!

I wonder if DT would like to put a quick recap of his diet plan here for new folks to take a look at?

Hi everyone So... I will begin by telling my story... I am a coffee addict... but the sugar and creamer are catching up to me...

Not to mention a heavy drinker of carbonated drinks...

I have started to use a vanilla stevia extract in my coffee and have greatly reduce my usage of creamer.

I now only drink soda one day a week.

I had to give up coffee when I first went on low carb way of eating because coffee was little more than a sugar delivery vehicle for me, and I used the powdered and artificial creamers myself, most of which have high fructose corn syrup as a componenet. The carbonated soft drinks are real killers. I think there are 39 grams of sugar in an 8 ounce can of coke. To put that in perspective, a teaspoon of sugar is 4 grams. So that 8 ounce coke has just a gram under 10 teaspoons of sugar in it!

My first round with the low carb/high fat way of eating (WOE) was exactly three years ago, when my doctor said that my pre-diabetes was now diabetes. He gave me some papers to read. These copies of old medical journal articles from the 1920's through the 50's or 60's. He told me that if I read those and followed the dietary recomendations in them I would not have to take pills, and I would never need insulin. Or I could follow the American Doabetes Asscoiation dietary recommendations and I will get sicker and sicker and eventual die from complications from diabetes.

The articles all outlined how a very low carb diet cured diabetes and caused rapid and sustained weight loss. So I went for it, and within six months I was within a few pounds of my high school wrestling weight. Then the holidays came. I ate that infamous doughnut. I quickly learned that I was indeed a sugar addict and that once on the wagon I had to stay on or else reverse all progress. Over the next two and a half years, I basically gained back about 2/3 of what I had lost because I kept eating all the salty and sugary high carb snacks that got me screwed up to begin with. The only thing that has kept me fro gaining it all back is that every few days I'd eat properly, maybe take a walk after dinner, and refrain from any carbs at all.

I am now back on the wagon to stay. I know that I cannot cheat with sweets and stay on track and healthy. Once I am back to my high school weight, I will add back in an occasional potatoes, corn, and beans. For now, I am meat only until I get down to where I want to be. For the record, I could lose 25 pounds from where I am now and look perfectly trim and healthy. But I am now fifty, and I want to see my six pack once more before I die. So my first stage goal is to lose the 25 pounds that make me unhealthy, sap my energy, and put a strain on all my organ systems. After that, this $hit gets real. I'll need @KRobby to help me put a weight lifting plan together at that point.

I started all on Monday of this week. As of this morning, I am down 4.8 pounds.

BFC!

EDIT: "was now diabetes"

Great stuff DT and very inspiring.

For some more inspiring words, I give you those immortal words of Rob Schneider(I thought this belongs in this thread too):

Is there a 12 step program?

Step 1 is admitting you have a problem.

Which step is it where we apologize to all the desserts, breads and pasta's we have offended?

What and when to eat to reduce insulin - Diet Doctor

"100 calories of cookies, is far more fattening than 100 calories of salmon, despite what all the obesity 'experts' claim."

That is what is difficult for many to accept as it seems counter-intuitive. There is an excellent book call Good Calorie, Bad Calorie by Gary Taubes that goes into the history of how we went from being as smart as Barney Fife to being as dumb as Jimmy Carter when it comes to nutrition (to be fair, Carter really wasn't to blame, but the first US guidelines were issued during his administration, so being a good American, I blame the President for everything :D A less dense, more readily accessible account of essentially the same stroy can be found in his book Why We Get Fat and What to Do About It

I wonder if DT would like to put a quick recap of his diet plan here for new folks to take a look at?

Eat meat, drink water would be the ideal summary. For me it is Eat Meat, drink water, and coffee with heavy cream, no sweeteners.

Meat should be minimally processed (no hot dogs or hot dog like sausages, lunch meats etc).

Cheese and other dairy should be minimized if weight loss is a goal.

Nuts and seeds are permitted in limited quantities (watch the carb count) but again, if weight loss is the goal, then nuts and seeds should be avoided until you reach your goal weight.

I also tend to only eat once or twice a day once I get adapted to the low carb/zero carb WOE.

Eat when hungry, not because the clock says it is time for breakfast or lunch or dinner.

No sugars, and no starches (flour, potatoes, rice, beans, corn, oatmeal and other cereals, etc.)

I will not be eating any veggies until I accomplish my goal, but any non-starchy veggie is on the table: leafy greens, broccoli, cauliflower, asparagus, onions, garlic, etc. Mushrooms are also fine for those who are into fungi. The king (or queen) of plant foods for this WOE is the avocado, imo. It is low carb and full of healthy fat.

Find time to hit the gym and stop eating trash. It's not hard in a profession like this one. Granted for those of us on the road it's tough those 2 or 3 days a week.. but certainly doable.

But that's no fun. What are you, a troublemaker or something?

;)

I suppose. The people we sit down with and sell are a prime example of how not to end up health wise. It's something I've taken to heart with a father who did not take care of himself. Granted, I'm on the younger end of most agents..
