Human greed alone is enough to say Socialism and Communism won't work, in my opinion. Human greed is also why capitalism works so well. It's not perfect, but it's just about the best thing you're gonna find!
California isn't doing so good with socialism.
Well, people like to point to the fire department as a good example of how socialism works well. That's pretty hard to argue with, largely because everyone loves fireman.
However, if you look at schools, police departments, hospitals, the dmv, and the management of the homeless situation in SF, PPP money given to big businesses that didn't need it, the list goes on and on how it doesn't work in this country.
I think you're really confused about how California's economy is messed up.
Socialism, does not work.
Why does it not work? Because people don't value, that which they do not have some investment in.
I live like a 10 minute walk from Venice Beach. Are you familiar with Venice Beach? It is where homeless people can get an EBT card, sleep on the beach all day, wonder around at night, and pay no taxes. They have health insurance, they have food, and with the temperate climate, they don't really have to worry about housing. The bathrooms at the beach are always gross. Why? Because we have a population that is trying to use it for their full-time bath services. Of course, that is better than when they just "do their business" on the beach itself.
There has been tremendous wealth generated by technology companies, most of that revenue has directly benefited the state of California. California is a tremendously resource rich state.
So what do you mean about DMV, hospitals, etc. What does the PPP have to do with anything?
Why did the PPP even happen? Because without it, businesses that watched their cash evaporate were going to be missing paychecks. The government providing forgivable loans helped the unemployment rate no crater harder. Let's not forget, this wasn't the result of some government social program, it was a reaction to help counter the impact of a communicable disease. Right now, southern California (which is much better than SF), there are no ICU beds. If people were trying to work through sickness and all these other things, what do you think the overall health of "the heard" would be? You are mixing two things that don't belong together if you are trying to use the PPP in a discussion about socialism.
Honestly, and I'm surprised to say this, universal basic income is a concept I've been coming around on more. The reason for that, is, if more people have money, then more people can spend it, more business can have paying customers, and so we can see a real uptick in growth (in theory). I was going to do some projections on what that would look like and what it would cost, but truth be told, I have had more pressing matters to deal with as of late.
So, and this is not meant as a trick question (at least from me), but what do you think are the benefits of socialism? Capitalism, without corruption, appears to be the strongest solution. The number one thing that appears to be screwing Los Angeles, is corruption. When the LAPD delete all their emails prior to 2016, the LASD is doing illegal searches on the Mayor of Compton for driving while black, and the tax payers are funding wasteful development projects that don't address the root issues of problems (like building shelters for homeless in high cost areas), it is cascading failure. The LA government lacks any reasonable accountability to the populous.
The first year I started making "real money", I wrote a check to the IRS for over $50,000. I still resent hearing about how tax money is spent, because I know what it has taken for me to earn it, and then it just gets spent supporting programs that actually make things worse.
So, realistically, what do you think would help address California's challenge between being generous with "those (allegedly) in need" and avoiding waste (like people using their EBT cards to live at the beach as bums full-time).
No, Germany was fascist! Russia is communist!
Does anyone around here who wants to provide input on issues like this know anything about history or are they just guessing. Sorry to single you out @scagnt83, not a personal slight in the least. Just pointing out that very few people understand history and its important context in forming arguments (debated positions).
We've homeschooled 3 from cradle to high school. One of the most important things my wife and I have taught my children is that definitions are paramount to good exchange on any level in communication. Without the same or proper definitions we are not having a conversation we are just talking.
Training agents was rather humors at times to see client and agent talk two different things and both seeming to feel as thought they were communicating to each other.![]()
I'm certainly not going to get into this back and forth of what is happening between a few folks here. I just wanted to give you a shout out for the sacrifices you made for your children. My wife and I did the same as you and homeshcooled our two children through high school. Both went onto college. Three years in my son decided he was done with college and didn't want to be an accountant. He is doing well in real estate down in West Palm Beach, FL. My daughter graduated magna cum laude with a degree in bio chemistry. Both are fantastic human beings. And believe it or not, they don't always hold the same political views as me, and that's okay.
The greatest gift we gave them was the ability to think critically and to communicate with other people. My son may be one of the best I've ever seen at engaging people in genuine conversation. In these days of social media, texting, etc., it seems fewer and fewer people can actually hold a real conversation.
