Health Net Redux

With Universal Coverage - carriers sales would be through the roof and they don't have to pay these pain in the a$$ agents.

Name a state with mandated auto coverage and SR-22 filings that does not have agents.

Dave -

I figured you would come thru on the Phen-Fen links.

A quick search came up with similar info.

So . . .

Either the lady fabricated her Phen-Fen claim, or she lied on the Health Nut application about having heart damage.

You pick.

For someone who truly loves IRONY (yes, I used to read all of the O'Henry stories when I was a kid) how's this for truly Ironic......

This lady was insured by Universal Care and got rescinded by Health Net for fraud on the application. Now here's the ironic part:

Health Net acquired Universal Care about 3 years ago and absorbed it into the HNet portfolio. So, if she hadn't even applied she would have ended up on Health Net anyway.:D

Cue Twilight Zone music.

One concern I have about all of this (not just Health Net) recission punishment is what it holds for the future, at least in CA.

The arbitrator is obviously rewarding someone excessively not because she suffered soooo much, but to punish the carrier for perceived misjustice in the overall retro review program. Cross already got hit by DMHC, Shield by DOI and now HNet by arbitration.

It's a dogpile right now and since CA has no mandate that any carrier be required to take applications and sell IFP plans, the backlash could be something these dimwits have not yet considered. Factor in that without these three carriers no state program including MediCal would work (see the demise of PacAdvantage).

I might suggest that these regulatory agencies consider the long-term consequences of excessive penalization. If these three carriers go away, CA could not provide health insurance to millions of residents (legal or otherwise;))

What percentage in your state have auto insurance?

And auto does not compete with a GOVERNMENT plan (Hillary plan), or a SUBSIDIZED plan (Medicare, Medicaid, CHIP, State plans, you name it).

Auto also will not FIX your car even if you do not have coverage. Imagine if every repair shop by law had to fix your car even if you had no coverage. Who would buy it?

Also, auto isn't guaranteed issue. Call State Farm with 3 DUI's and see what they say.

What would you WANT them to say?

"Oh, no problem. We'll insure you so that you can go out and maybe kill someone next time."

I'm on record for a single-payor mandated system... Medicare for all of us. Let the private sector sell supplements.

We have the best healthcare delivery system in the world, but if 40% of the population can't afford it or can't get access to it, what good is it?

The current system is not sustainable and no one has any love for the insurance carriers. If he wins by a landslide (55%) President Obama can make it happen.

JFK was able to make Medicare happen and he actually lost the popular vote. The right leader with the right plan at the right time can make anything happen. Lyndon Johnson with voting rights. Nixon with China, Bush with Iraq, Obama with universal single-payor coverage.

No one in the medical establishment liked Medicare when it was first proposed, nor did they want Medicaid. If you took both away today, most doctors would starve to death, especially specialists. If you were a doctor which money pool would you want access to? The checking account of Blue Cross... or the United States Treasury. That's how it will be sold. Wait and see.

I'm all for it. I'd rather sell life insurance or supplements anyway.

Well, call me, I'll say not a problem (if you are in California). Throw in an accident and a speeding ticket as well. You'll run out of money before I have to send you away. The equivalent in health is you would have to be dead for a few months before I couldn't insure you. I have auto carriers that will take you pretty much regardless, but not health carriers (unless you are group).

The fact that one auto carrier won't write it doesn't mean none will.

Dan

P.S. The fact that your license is suspended, invalid, never existed, etc, doesn't stop writing auto insurance. Why do you have to be breathing to get health insurance?:laugh::laugh:

Me: "My son has a 104 fever"

Doctor's office: "We can get him in around late May - or go stand in line like cattle at the free clinic."

That's single-payor.
