I have MS Essentials (free) and run MalwareBytes (dotcom) occasionally. I did install SpyBot and AdAware and they slowed down my system so I removed them. I agree with the others that it may be your anti-virus slowing down your system. However, I've never had a virus so I can't really speak from much experience. I practice "safe computing"!

The sites MakeUsOf and How-ToGeek (google them) recently ran some articles about JAVA security issues.
