How about the guys who are recent grads of the "insurance academy," or are just leaving the protective arms of a "captive agency?" I broke out by becoming a regional mkt. dir, and received leads from the company (I had been captive, independent and both/and). I made a ton of calls to these leads, bought a few and had some referrals and repeats.

A new guy, what do they do? In these days of "do not call" lists and "greenriver ordinances," just what's a newby gonna do? Do you recommend buying leads, advertising, trade shows, or what? THIS is why I asked the P&C question (which received no answer BTW). I should have put "gal" in my username I guess. Many of you have had years in the biz so you have referrals and repeat business. I was in for 7 years and out for 5. So I'm kind of starting over.

rapidrobert,

IMO for a newby just starting out business to business marketing or door to door depending on what you're selling is a good way to make some bucks without spending any money on marketing except for your time and flyers.

I've been in the insurance biz for a couple of years and I still find it beneficial and rewarding to spend my time meeting potential clients by walking and talking.

robert, if you are well versed and agressive, buy internet leads. Have a thorough pitch and delivery, strong follow up, and you'll do just fine. I don't think there are a lot of agents here that have a strong P&C background. Most sling health, like me. As you build your client base, cross sell Life -actually get a Life quote out to every health prospect.

If you buy leads, you are investing in yourself. You'll work the lead harder than any lead ever given to you.

If you are doing P&C biz, I do not know. I would assume that you could make a door hanger and walk the neighborhoods if you want to get out.

I focus on the senior market where I have to jump through hoops with some products.

What about contacting local Mortgage Officers and Real Estate Agents for P&C referrals? I am also new in the P&C business and trying to establish relationships with them and also new and used car dealers. I'm not sure how to go about it?

See ALREADY I've gotten good advice!!! Thanx and keep it coming.

As far as the PC referrals you need to build a relationship or two with mortgage officers and they can steer clients your way no doubt about it.

When you're walking and talking going business to busines you stop by and chat with the owner or manager and introduce yourself. You can even target these types of business and make it an all day thing to hit mortgage companies and auto dealerships.

A lady I know who specializes in p&c does this and gets high quality referrals and business all the time. She just sets one day a week to spend all day hitting her target business.

You do this enough times (law of large numbers) you will become successful.

All you have to do is work.

I'll give you a little insight on what I do sometimes...

I do business to business marketing probably more than your average agent...I will even be so forward as to walk into other insurance agencies and introduce myself as a specialist in health and life insurance. Most of the time you'll be greeted warmly especially if they do not do any health & life (this is the case more often than not).

Anyways, I just started a relationship with a Brooks insurance agency that is going to send me all their life leads because they don't write life...pretty soon my name was being passed around to 3 different agencies as a option to send their life leads (I didn't know brooks didn't write life insurance). This week I have received 4 leads that I have set 3 appts for next week. This is what I'm talking about.

All you have to do is work.

thanks for the advice, my problem is that my position requires me to be in the office i am working for a captive company and my boss wants an personal lines agent in the office at all times and that is me.
Would work as well by calling them or sending them something with my business cards?
