LIS - Extra Help - no SS?

Cancer. In the state of Tennessee if they are receiving treatment for Cancer (not all types, for example lung cancer doesn't qualify) They can be placed on TNCARE(our Medicaid) while receiving treatment. I have quite a few, and yes they have higher income from SS. But the cost of treatment is high, so they are placed into the TNCARE system while receiving treatment.

I also have a few folks that have rare diseases that are on TNCARE as well. One has an income of $4200.00 SS a month. But the treatment runs around
$8000.00 a month.

That is why I suggested these folks be steered to a case worker with Medicaid, they will know where to put them. If they have large expenses or require treatment (doesn't sound like they do) The costs associated with those treatments,co pays, etc., will be used to "spend down" their monthly income, and they may be placed on Medicaid.

It is also not uncommon, (again in TN ) to have one spouse on TNCARE and the other not. Even though you are using the same household income. Blows my mind, but I run into this scenario daily.

I also suggested to contact Medicaid, because Specialist offices, clinics, hospitals, etc.. social workers are there to help with bills for the FACILITY. Many will assist with applications, etc for Medicaid, but they are following the bouncing ball and don't know all the in's and out's .

When this person is placed on Medicaid or enrolled into Medicare, they need to work with their Doctors, specialists, etc., to receive possible RX help, because these social workers know the ins and outs of RX programs, grants available, etc.

Not sure how he is a LIS prior to Medicare, but it sounds like he qualified as a Medicaid beneficiary . Keep in mind when/if he enrolls into Medicare he will need to RE APPLY for the MSP (Medicare Savings Program) as he had the RX help PRIOR to being on Medicare, so he NEVER was enrolled in MSP. Hope that makes sense.
