Med sup and part D.Which co's to use for both

Exactly 1. Total.

Seriously though that's an impossible question. I could be fine here in FL with one med supp and never do part D. But I don't want to.

It all depends on your state/zip and the plans with the lowest premiums and a good rate history for med supps.
For drugs I have about 7 of the 9 carriers.

How can you do med sup but not Part D. It seems that would be a must have.

Many of us will pick a few Part D to have and collect the $36 commission for it, but if a carrier comes up as a better option than one of the ones we use, we just recommend that one and don't earn the comp.

In my state there are 23 PDP plans - I'm contracted with the majority of them, but if I run someone's Rx's and a plan I can't sell is like better than the ones I can sell, it doesn't but me. It's just not worth the hassle contracting with all of them.

As has already been stated, that's going to depend on your zips. Every area will have different companies as the most competitive.

I'm licensed in 5 states but only do part D in FL.
Just today I had one of my Iowa Med supp clients call and ask about her part d plan. I got her meds, went to medicare.gov and showed her what medicare pulls up as the top 3 plans, ranked from lowest OOP.

I gave her the drug cost and then gave her the phone number to sign up.

Keep in mind that you will have to do the training for any Part D carriers for which you get appointed. Once you have a year of the training under you, you should be able to zip through them each year, but they are a pain initially.

Maybe you already have this, but here are some summary rates from the VA insurance dept:

https://www.scc.virginia.gov/boi/pubs/medsup_cht.pdf

That will help you see what companies do business in your state and give you some sense of their comparative rates.

I am not an agent, but from reading I've done on the site, one thing that I think would be a key factor in "how many companies?" is your current experience level. If you are just starting, you have a lot of information and patterns to master beyond individual company policy information. (for me personally, that would be 3 companies. I don't think I could learn all the selling stuff and also master more than 3 companies to start.)

Edit: I think one starting point for evaluating various companies would be to get connected with an IMO that would give you access to the CSG quoting engine.

Drug plans are the same way. At least during this timeframe last year, there were agents that posted that sold only Medigap plans; others that sold Medigap and PDP plans; and yet others that sold Medigap, PDP and MA plans. Medicare/CMS sets some constrictions/restraints in your PDP-MA selling environments that are not present in the Medigap selling environment.

Edit: If you wanted to sell PDP, SilverScript might be a good first plan to look at. In my state, it is one of the lower priced plans. It is one of the first ones I would consider were I going to sell PDP's.

Edit: if posting this question in FE means you are already a seasoned FE salesperson and you want to add MedSupp/Medigap, and possibly PDP, then the answers to your questions are probably quite different. The experienced sales people might be able to give you better responses if you provide a few more "clues" as to the nature of your situation.

how many co's appointments do you need for med sup? same ? for part D

You can get by with one, but you'll usually want to pick about 3 of the top Med Supps, while considering underwriting. If you only want one PDP, then go with SilverScript. It may not fit all of your clients but it will fit with many of them. Other than that, if SilverScript isn't the best for your client, then steer them in the right direction and let them sign themselves up.

If you want to give me a call I can run quotes for you to see who the top companies are.
