Missed enrolling in Part B

Thanks for all your replies. I did not realize that everyone has to pay $134 as premium. I thought monthly premium was $0 if they had 40 credits and all of $160 was a penalty.

The 40 credits make it $0 for Part A. The $134 is for Part B. A and B are Original Medicare. A supplement OR a Medicare Advantage plan can help with the costs not covered by Medicare.

This will all make more sense after you speak with an agent who sells both supplements and Medicare Advantage plans.

One more thing to add - is the total for both parents' part B payments equal to $160? I have seen people who qualify for full low income subsidy get a part of their part B paid. Ask a local Medicare agent if they qualify for low income subsidy. Low income subsidy will also help with their prescriptions.

Part B starts from July 1st. Please tell me there is still time.

I am not an agent. I don't know for sure, but think they have 63 days from when the ACA plan with prescription drug coverage ended.

This is why I keep telling her to reread the letters carefully. I have no knowledge of low income subsidies and how they work, but I am seeing comments about 2 people and one premium figure. I don't figure anybody can give good advice in this situation when they are restricted to making assumptions.

It's just like, there is a substantial difference between "they got on Medicare and Social Security last month" and "Part B starts July 1st".

It's each $160. It was approved last month, part A started retroactively and part B starts July 1st.

Part B can't be $160 each if they haven't even picked a part D plan.

Why haven't you had an agent look at it yet?
Or at least post the letter. Something isn't adding up. We are missing info

People here have said it's $134 for part B for the year 2018. $26 extra is the penalty. That's 10% of $134 per year for two years. Makes sense to me, no?

Are you saying $134 is for the couple combined? I don't think that's true as my mom and dad both received a letter each.
