New Agent Contract Terminated

I don't want to sound like a crybaby or someone with a bad attitude. I'm a man and am taking their decision like a man.

My wife has been in the insurance industry for about 15 years, managing offices for an Allstate agent. He got scared when the economy got crazy a couple of years ago and sold the agency to another agent. This action spurred my wife to become an agent. She was accepted by another large carrier and spent two years building an agency from the ground up. I am very proud of her efforts. She just recently was promoted to permanent agent status.

I made the decision to follow her into the insurance profession. I met with her district manager last May and based on this meeting I quit my job. I had been working in corporate America for the past 20+ years but decided I wanted to be in business for myself.

I spent night and day studying for the CA P&C and Life/Health tests and passed both tests by the end of June. I was studying for the Series 6 exam when my reserve agent appointment was approved and I stated work in the middle of July.

At the beginning of August, I found the DM was being forced out of the company. ( I had been there for less than one month) There were 4 or 5 career agents working at the DM's office along with me and one other reserve agent.

The company reassigned the career agents to another DM but left me hanging. The other reserve agent quit. No phone call, VM or E-mail for three weeks. I was finally told that they were going to terminate my reserve agent status. The reason for this decision is a restriction that prevents a husband and wife from having separate agencies. They said I could work as a producer under my wife's agency.

This is not an equitable solution as I would not get any marketing assistance and would have to pay for any formal training I attend.

I had a high paying job, which I would have never left had they been honest and ethical regarding the husband/wife restriction during the initial interview and approval process.

I was only one life policy away from completing all requirements to be promoted from reserve agent to career agent. I would have had a real contract and would have been able to go to the university and received marketing assistance. I was all set to make things happen.

Now, my options are to return to my old career, be a producer for my wife or switch to another carrier and start their agent program. I researched State Farm and based on what I heard on this site, they are as cut throat and unethical as the current company I am associated with.

All of this happened in less than a two month period of time. I find myself giving the company the bird whenever I see their advertisements on TV.

What do you guys think is my best option? My savings are going to disappear fast without income.

WOW,
That was tough!
Sounds like Farmers insurance:)

State Farm & Allstate are good options IMO as they give new agents good training. Nothing is easy but both those are easier than starting as a scratch IA. I've know plenty of guys that left a captive to go IA but I'm only met a few that started in P&C as an IA.

But, your mileage may vary. Having your wife as a captive does make having you as an IA an attractive option since you could write a bunch of stuff she can't. Just have to be careful how the referrals are done.

Have you tried calling up line management to see if you can change someones mind?

Best of luck.

Definitely something to think about. Unanswered question is, do you have enough in reserve to go out on your own?

Wow, tough luck...especially in this economy

Going IA is a nice idea but it's a huge difference from captive. You'd be forced to generate all your own leads, less name recognition, pay all expenses...etc. Not an easy road...but profitable and no DM's to deal with.

Sounds like the DM was a bonehead...how could he not know the husband/wife deal. As a representative of the company though...his word may have some type of legal binding with the company. I think I'd consult with an attorney or someone with a background in that area....especially since you gave up a good job based on his word/promises.

Go independent. take a look at Brightway if you happen to be in the southeast us or tx.

I'm located in California. I'll take a look at Brightway just so I have something to compare against.

Bob,

I purposely omitted the name of the carrier but you got it right.

Yes, P and C is a tough business to start in as a IA. Which line of business do you suggest I focus on if I choose to take the IA route?

Thank you,

That is part of the problem. I have some money and would have more if I could find a buyer for my boat. (that's a hard sell in this economy too) I have reserves for at least 6 months but not much more than that.

OK, I am confused........

Why would your Wife have a Farmers agency and you would start a Farmers agency also???

SO You want to compete each other? NICE!

What is wrong with working with your wife? There are LOTS of husband/wife agencies, who are incredibly successful.

And I have to say, no offense, but why in the hell did you quit your job before you had obtained your licenses first? (head scratcher) Your were completely UNPREPARED to start an agency and quit the job way too soon.

Just go get licensed and work the agency with your wife. Pretty simple.

Sounded like he wanted to take advantage of the marketing allowance...probably some salary?

My views on what lines are better to start with wouldn't provide you with an accurate view for your area.

If you have a niche that you're comfortable and plugged into...and a carrier that supports a competitive product for that niche...that seems to be very profitable for many agents. Had a friend who hooked up with an aviation carrier years ago and made a killing...he was a pilot, spoke the language, had a good (exclusive)carrier and made a mint.

They are doing you a favor! Go independent and when your wife has a piece of business that she can't place, you can. Work as a team with separate companies.
