Re: Question for New Agents.

A friend of mine that works in the insurance industry talked my into it. Before I was selling auto's. I felt it was time for a change.

Re: Question for New Agents.

I had a joint owned robotics and industrial integration company that my father and his 3 brothers ran together. I started out as a technician for their electrical contracting company, but as I learned more, and started making my own contacts, I went out on my own with controls and custom robotic applications. At first the family just knew I would come crawling back to them after a massive failure, but I made more in my first year than they did. (at 19 years old) SO, after lots of conversation, we merged all the companies, and the rest was history until Nov 2008.

In 2008 the economy was killing us, but we were making it, until one of my uncles passed away from several strokes, then it all crashed down. in less than 6 months, one uncle was dead, another was dying from liver failure, I had a heart attack (at 28) and my father suffered a MASSIVE stroke that has made him function almost on a child level.

GUESS WHAT, none of us had insurance, no life, no CI, no DI etc. but we all had boats, race cars and homes on the lake, ETC.

So I started studying at first for my own use, but then I fell in love with the industry, and after losing EVERYTHING and living now in a small house that I bought for a rental during the dumb times, I can say I am a happy insurance agent!!!

I may never make the kind of money that I made back then, but the money that I do make will be protected, invested, managed, leveraged, and hopefully multiplied to the point that I can someday buy a huge annuity from myself and retire with a few hundred grand a year coming in.

WHEW,

OK, I'M DONE

Over the last year or so there have been a ton of new agent post asking about getting into or starting in the Insurance business.
Commissions, Contracting, Training, Leads etc......

My questions are:

Why did you look at this business?
What is your work back ground?
Did you look at other careers as well? Sales?

Thanks,

Wino wit da Blues

1. My husband and I were full time RVers and having a great time traveling until he had a heart attack. We bought a house in the same town and when I tried to get homeowners insurance I couldn't get an agent to return my call. There wasn't any agents in the small village where our home was. So, I thought I might as well see if I can run a business.

2. I worked for the Federal Government (DoD) as a CPA and as an auditor. My speciality was analyzing financial statements and offering solutions to help one of the defense departments get their statements audit ready. I have dual B.S. degrees in Business & Finance and Accounting. I have a masters degree in Business Administration.

3. No. Maybe I should have, but I felt like I had identified a need that I might be able to fill and allow me to put my MBA to the test. I love it, but the jury is still out on how successful I might be. My independent agency hit the break even point 3 months after I became an independent and I've actually cleared a few bucks in the past several months. Good thing I didn't get into it for the money b/c there hasn't been a lot of that yet, but I can see a trend in the right direction.

James,

WOW that is some story. Can I use it when I talk to people about insurance? I'm glad you found a business that you can enjoy.

I'm tired of working jobs for low pay and crappy raises. This is an industry where I can be a professional and earn what I'm truly worth. It won't be easy, but if it were everybody would do it.

Sometimes it appears everybody is doing it! I am looking for office space and every decently appointed park has a Wealth Advisor or Financial Consultant or some other creative mush on the directory.

Davis,

Sure you can use my story, It's why I'm in this business. Just make sure that you include that I'm 6'2" with a six pack;)

In all reality, I had tons of chances to buy insurance. People stopped by nearly once a week at the office and tried to sell us, but I followed the elders on it and said no. We ALWAYS said that if one of us got sick, the others would support them until they were better, its what families do.... BUT, we never expected ALL of us to have catastrophic illnesses all at the same time!!!!!!

That's not a mistake I will ever make again.
