I have a couple of clients new to Medicare with a retirement package that includes lifetime drug coverage. They want to enroll in a PPO plan with Rx because it's much like the plan they are moving away from. Can they do this?

Why does this person want Part D?

Call your benefits administrator before you make any changes, or sign up for Medicare drug coverage. If you have employer or union coverage and get Medicare drug coverage, you may lose your employer or union health and drug coverage (for you and your dependents) even if you qualify for Extra Help. If this happens, you may not be able to get your employer or union coverage back.

They want the PPO Medical with Rx plan because it's a $0 premium. If they go with a PPO Medical only plan, the premium is $163. They did not want to go with a Supplement because of the premium so it wouldn't make sense to them to sign up for a PPO medical only with copays and a premium higher than a supplement plan. They spoke to their plan administrator, who assured them they will never lose their retirement drug coverage no matter the Medicare plan they enroll in.

Never trust what you are told . . . read the SOB for the real truth

Years ago, IBM retirees were told their plan would never change . . . then it did . . . and then it changed again.

And if you think Medicare will never change then you probably believe in the tooth fairy, Easter bunny and Santa Claus

yes they can but the question is how the rx plans coordinate which each other. You can ask their plan admin. and ask if the employer rx plan will coordinate with part d ( chance of a correct answer is 50/50)- if so they may pay the co pays of the part d. With that said it hardly ever works they way so either they use their employer rx plan or they use the part d which ever the pharmacy submits claims to.

Thanks for the response. They will use the retirement drug plan. They have been retired for several years and use their retirement drug plan. Once they get the new plan, the pharmacy will only have their retirement drug plan on file, as that's how it works now. I had a client four years ago with the same retirement drug plan and enrolled him in a Medicare Advantage HMO Rx plan. He was in it for a year and had no problems. He got all his prescriptions through the retirement plan, not the HMO Rx plan.

So, in other words, they will lie about their coverage.

Lol lie? There is nothing anywhere that dictates what Rx coverage a Medicare beneficiary must use in a situation like this. When you advise a client to use GoodRx instead of their PDP, is that lying?

Same thing with Bell South, MA Bell and AT&T. Saw if for years back and forth.

But did you just say that Santa, the Easter Bunny and the Tooth Fairy aren't real?
