I look at quite a few agent websites. Some are professionally designed while others are templates or home made. (I have a mix of both, but mostly templates).

I am close to contracting with a webmaster to design, optimize and maintain a new site.

What works best for you? Lots of content & self serve information? Instant quotes? Toll free number? "Talking" sites? Blog? Q&A section?

I know what I like, and what kind of feedback I get from my sites, but curious what your clients & prospects say about why they went to and stayed on your site.

Just better make sure the person really understands optimizing and marketing of your website. Trust me having a beautiful site with everything means nothing if it does not drive traffic. I have not seen many optimized insurance websites.

The Cost for a True SEO consultant to optimize and promote website is around $1500.00 Most Website Designers have no clue about SEO. They are designers to make you feel good!!! Most sites they build will hurt you with your overall ranking and optimizing strategy. Can you get it cheaper? Sure you can, but you get what you pay for.

Answer to your Questions!!!

The real question is, how to you know a great SEO company from one that's just blowing smoke? I wouldn't even know how to interview a company before I hired them to do SEO work.

Great Question, I have a Great Article from our monthly staff magazine that explains that in detail, I will scan and post it so all can read.

There are some very good SEO books that will tell you what you need to know to handle this yourself and/or how to hire someone. Just a click away from Amazon! "Search Engine Positioning" is one that I have. I assume it has been updated since I got it around 4 years ago.

Content is king, but only relevent content. Having a blog is another great way to drive traffic. Talking sites? if its that robotic sounding lady, then i would say no thanks, looks to cheesy. If its a nicely done video of you, then it could really help. instant quotes? I would say only if they can do the app. online, otherwise, you are going to probably come up with different numbers for the 'real' quote when they call.

a toll free number? that is something i have been wondering too.

Do you think its important to have an 800 number? I am getting about 250 people a week to my site, and only get maybe 3 calls or emails from it. Do you think having an "official" toll free number would make people more comfortable? I know web sales are something that depends greatly on the comfort level that the client feels, and if they see anything that they don't think is 100% legit, they will leave and look elsewhere.

I've had my cell number on the contact information, mainly because its honestly the best way to reach me, but i'm thinking its time for a toll free line.

what do you guys think?

Content will keep people coming back . . . if it is relevant, and if it is easy to find.

I have content sites, including blogs, that attract attention and generate calls & emails. What I don't have at this time is what I consider a good place to find all the information and laid out in a way that makes it easy on visitors.

A toll free number is a must if you are marketing beyond your state borders. You can do fine if only marketing in one state without one, but that is something I have passed on.

I look at TF numbers like posting your email or fax number. Just another way to get junk you don't want and I don't need another number out there for telemarketers, charities & politicians to call when I am paying for it.

SEO seems to be a moving target. Just when you learn all the answers someone changes the questions. Way over my head.

Dave had listed some very good sources for SEO in the past. I looked at some and my eyes crossed. All Greek (or should I say Geek) to me.
