Hello all.

I have been an agent for the last several years with a captive fraternal company and have finally had enough of the lack of support, constant service work on members who I did not write without any opportunity to turn a profit and zero potential career advancement along with no training. I have done fairly well in this difficult situation but my struggle to move on from the company is that my experience has been with only working from an assigned pool of people who either have insurance with the company or are just a member. All my prospect efforts came from this pool of people so my experience of having to go out and find my own prospects to call from scratch is none.

I have been looking for my next career opportunity but I seem to just get calls from places like farmers, NYL, Mass and Pru but all for an Agent position but I am too scared of the risk of failure now that I am married with a child. I am in a different stage in my life and I am looking for a position with more of a guarantee paycheck rather than you eat what you kill but I am unsure of where I can take my skills as an agent to the next step in my career. All I know is my agent role and I do not have a degree so I feel really stuck. I love the industry but need a more secure job.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Do you have any securities licenses and a history of GDC production? If so, you could take that experience and apply to be an advisor at a bank.

You could also apply to be an assistant to an advisor. I know Edward Jones often hires "branch office administrators" to assist their advisors. Sometimes banks or credit unions will hire assistants for their bank advisors.

You could apply to be a personal banker at a bank or credit union... but make no mistake - it is a sales position.

Just a few ideas to start you off with. Keep in mind however, that banks will look for a degree. They may hire you without one, but with the "job market" being what it is, you'll probably be competing against some freshly minted college graduate for the same job.
