Writing 15 policies a week ?

Re: writing 15 policies a week??

I am really impressed with how so many people on this board have such a high approval rating. Underwriting kills me every month.

That could be a byproduct of a bad pre screen or not understanding the underwriting of the companies you are recommending.

I could (and have offered) to train the underwriters at my carriers, however my $20,000 per day + expense fee has always turned them off.

I have never had an issue rate under 80%.

I have never had rate ups (medical condition) exceed 10% of applicants, excluding tobacco and height / weight.

Most of the carriers I write issue preferred over 80% of the time or greater in waiver states. Non waiver states this drops down pretty fast.

90% of underwriting is done after I talk to them. The only surprises are RX searches or when they spill their guts to a RSA phone ?naire - and suddenly remember they had a third arm growin out of their back.

Re: writing 15 policies a week??

It sounds like your customer base may be the problem. Most carriers are fairly strict about alcoholism. If you are taking a lot of these apps at or near a local treatment center, that could be a problem. There are a lot of variables to consider, Is there any commonality in what these people are being declined for and the carriers that you are using?

Well first off I am not writing 15 apps a week. I am more around 6-7 apps a week of which 4 are getting approved.
I can honestly say I consistently get 9 policies approved a month all year long. I know that a big differnce from 16 that I posted before.

What are the getting declined for? Do you want me to go into specific health conditions? Multiple medications treating multiple ailments, A major condition or procedure that has been in the last 5 years, any kind of ailment regarding the spine, and so on and so on.
I can't tell you how many people I speak to that are in need of disease management.

I use just a few carriers for my indiviudal health business and one is really my primary.

Online applications has really been improved this year. With this technology I see no problem with writing 15 apps a week and being able to handle the case load. One has to have the business first.

We should get a pool going on here?

Who can get the most individuals approved in one month
Or who can get the most permium approved on indiviudal sales in one month.

Darn, I wish I was in this business long enough to go in "the pool" with the sharks!

To be fair - I'll take the first 3 weeks off.

The better competition would be who could do the most apps with the same amount of money or lowest amount of money spent.

Doing massive amount of apps is not rocket science if you have a big enough check book.

Doing it on the cheap - now that's where the skill comes in!

That may be your problem as much as anything.

Who are the carriers and who is your primary?

I am approved with probably a dozen health carriers but only use 3 or 4 on a regular basis. Lately, quite a few have been a fit for Aetna. Go back a few months and it was Humana, who I still use but not as frequently. Before that, Golden Rule, before that . . .

Pricing & plan design are factored in along with medical history.

If you are getting a lot of turn downs for Rx, check your underwriting guides. Quite a few carriers say 3 or more Rx for the same illness is a decline. Others rate a flat 20 - 25% for each med. Someone taking 3 meds could be an autodecline.
