40% rate increase in IL

Carriers with obvious liberal underwriting should be a red flag.

I don't do as much underwritten business as I used to, but carriers I am familiar with, set a cap of 40 - 50 units daily.

There is no magical underwriting that allows one carrier to do something others can't/won't do and continue to do so with impunity.

For a long time BXGA used unisex rates and no load for tobacco use. They finally figured out the error of their ways and corrected to (birth) gender rates and a 12% adjustment for tobacco use.

Carriers that accept anyone who can fog a mirror and offer rates competitive with carriers who have "normal" underwriting rules are destined to crash & burn.

Med sup is in a serious fight for its life over the coming yrs .One of the main problems is so many T-65's that are in good health buy mapd . The sick t-65's buy supps . They're not getting a pool of younger people in good health to get supps . Also with the eye popping mapd terms coming for 2026 supps will drowning in sick people . A % of the sup people in good health will be fleeing to mapd over the next 12 months . Also I'm reading most states moving to birthday rule .

This might be the best post you have made. I agree 100% with you.

Not if I can help it.
Also I'm reading most states moving to birthday rule .
9 states is not most states. The birthday rule in Illinois is weak. They have to change within the same company, so the only way they can save money is from going from F to G, or from G to N.

I said "most states moving to the birthday rule or have plans. To"and thats happening . Many predict that within 3 yrs 80% of states will have Gi on supps .

While Medigap has more exposure than MA, and does so without the benefit of taxpayer subsidies, they are also secondary payers to Medicare and only have to absorb 20% of the spillover Part B claims.

Medicare pays most of the Part A claim, everything but the $1676 deductible.

Most, but not all, T65's I talk to are healthy, but I would not expect someone who only pushes MA plans to know that. And if those same agents focus on low income folks with unhealthy lifestyles it would seem that folks gravitating to MA plans are looking for plans without a premium and low copays.

As long as they remain healthy, no question the MA plan is a good choice . . . but not so much when their health goes south and especially if they can't afford to pay the OOP.

It's a bit of a damned if you do, damned if you don't mess.
