Aetna new commish

I disagree with Aetna's new commission policy and as such I will not write Aetna medical plans for either individual or group.

Of course, I will also take this up with SAHU / NAHU / CAHU. However I doubt Aetna has much to fear from them. Many agents tell me that this association is "bought and paid for" by the large carriers. If they are right, I will drop my membership. This is their chance to determine what master they serve.... the carriers or the agents?

More greed via a huge rate increase? It would not surprise me.

Before I retire for the evening for the football game...

Geez Al, take a pill.

The FIRST priority for a professional is not what the comp is - it's what's best for the client.

NAHU master they serve? Are you that naive? Another chump sending his dough off to NAHU...

Rate increases are at the pleasure of the California DOI.

I don't get it? They bumped up commish in all states why the grief?

I am surprised they keep your appointment active for under 11 app per year.

Now if you can get them to pay on total premium, I will back you up on that one...

I'm lost. The entire world operates this way Al - you join a company and start at a low rate then make more as you work more. If McDonalds offers $7.50 to start then eventually $9.00 after a year should no one work there because they should start at $9.00?

Aetna has a lot more headaches with newbies and as new agents become senior the companies have a lot less hassles, therefore are worth more.

I started with Assurant at 20% and go to 25%. I was thrilled when I got to 25% - not pissed that I didn't get it to start.

Heck, I just got a raise by Aetna. I was locked in at 15% and now am at 20%.

In California, PacifiCare did something similar and agents stopped writing them. Blue Shield did something similar and agents stopped writing them.

The "good" news is that very soon the voters here will authorize a new "era" in health insurance. We'll all be getting 3%.

A letter from an agent who clearly has virtually no business with a carrier is going to generate exactly nothing. And including an insult to the health agent association in that letter will not win browie points.

Action speaks louder than words. I have yet to write a policy with Aetna because I think their benefits suck. Pay me a 0% commission if you want or 50%. I still won't write the plan. Doing what is best for my client comes first.

Are the commission levels affected by the rating of the applicant A,B,C and D?
Looks like they bump you up to 20% after 11 applications, which is fine by me.

Salpro,

California is set up as follows:

A - 15/18/20 then 10% after first year
B - same but at A premium schedule
C - same but at A premium schedule

They are going to pay the FYC/10% only based on the A level or premium, so no pay on the increase if they are rated.

Cross here does it differently but likely comes out the same.

The production requirements to get 15/18/20 seem to be the same as those quoted here already, so that is probably univeral.

BTW, NAHU just raised the monthly from $29 to $33 in California. Sigh.

Or 0% - CA is a mess, and my fear is it will spread like wildfire.

Not all Aetna states are 10% renewal, I think only 3 are - the rest are 7%

I'm lost. The entire world operates this way .

How come every carrier in CA except Kaiser pays me 20%?

If you are willing to take 15% from Aetna, go right ahead. I don't care.

As for the guy who posted that it is not about commission, if you honestly believe that the Aetna plan is 'better' for a client than another higher paying one, that is your choice. But when they are both the same (and I don't know of any plan that Aetna has that is "better" than the Blues, HealthNet, etc. in CA) I prefer to write the one that pays me better. I work hard. I deserve it. Call me whatever name you wish, but I'm honest about it.

You wait a year.

The one thing and ONLY thing that Rick and I agree on (I think) is that agents are so "stupid" and have zero representation/organization in CA, that they will probably roll over and 'take it in the shorts" on this. What's next? The other carriers are all going to drop to 15% BUT there will be NO performance bump. You heard it here first. Just wait.

Anyway, I'm getting out of IFP. I leave it all to you guys. I sold a nice small group policy today where the BM rep did all the work for me. Yearly premium will be about 25K at 7%, and while the commish is not huge, they will stick with me for a long time (as small groups tend to do) and I have zero UW issues. Do you have any idea how many small businesses (5 to 15 EEs) who can afford group coverage don't have a (good) broker... or even know that in CA coverage is automatic?

Will I write Aetna group? In your dreams. (Actually, I like to sell California Choice... prem is a bit higher but the biz has great flexibility. Very popular out here with small and mid-size group.)

Oh, and once this group is signed I'll sell them Colonial DI and perhaps accident. After that, maybe individual life with Fidelity (for younger people.)

I've about given up on anything that has strict UW. After very close to two years in this biz, this year I plan to work smart and not hard.

I don't know about the rest of you but as Lindsey Buckingham wrote... "."
