Aetna new commish

John P the reason why we are upset in california everybody started with Aetna at 20 percent and now they are bumping you down to 15%. That is the reason why people are frustrated not to many jobs in America do you get a decrease in your pay if you do what do you do? Find another job or company. Just my input for a fairly new agent that is building his book of business and did not write 11 apps for Aetna last year.

For quite a long time, the plan I sold the most was with Health Net at 15% commish where everyone else was as 20%. However, most agents wouldn't touch them and they had to raise the commission.

Blue Shield changed their commission structure from 20/10 on new premiums to a higher 1st year and lower renewals based upon original premium. They thought the "big boys" would love it but the guys who write a lot of business (especially on the internet) did not keep their clients too long and Blue Shield wound up paying out more in commish than they used to. The reverted back to the "old" way as their default option and kept the higher 1st year for all who wanted it.

PacifiCare had a number of commisison levels based upon the cost of their group policy. Agents refused to write them and their attempt at becoming a direct writer failed.

Unless Aetna is reducing commissions to come up with a "killer" plan, this will backfire as well. They have the right to do this and I assume they are trying to give their smaller brokers an incentive to write more with them. What will really happen is that they will write more with other carriers.

Why they are doing this now is strange. With legislation pending to end our ability earn a living selling insurance, I wonder why bother?

Understandable. I thought CA was 15% last year. I'd be pissed too.

Yeah, but will enough agents be pissed off enough to make this go away? If not, you will see it nationwide a year from now... with all carriers. You think they LIKE us? I want what you're smokin'!

Rick once talked about a "kick a$$" association JUST for agents to speak out about this crap and the FMO garbage thrown at us. I wish he would put it together. I'd be the first person to join (and probably the first to be thrown out)

Aw hell, this sh*ts been goin on forever. Nothin' new.

The insurance industry has been looking for ways to cut out the agent comp since the beginning of time. The reason is - it's an expensive form of distribution for them. Problem is...it's the best producing form of distribution! They've tried everything - and nothin' comes close.

They DO NOT care about the agent doing 3-4 apps a year.
They DO care about the agent doing 50-100. Can't blame 'em, they're in business to make money too.

Nice thing about being independent, your client, and you have a choice.

Supply and demand baby.

Well put Paul. Every time I think about the commission level of BCBS in MD I cringe, but WE DO HAVE THE ABILITY to place people with carriers who can serve their needs, while making a good living. If BCBS told agents "Sell 11 policies and we'll bump you up to 15%-20% I'd be on them like white on rice because BCBS is the easier name to sell from a brand perspective.

I think to myself, "How can agents allow BCBS to get away with paying us less than 5% when some other carriers can go up to 30ish. ANSWER: Because they have the biggest $$#% in the state and they know it. Combine that with agents who have been selling for 15-30 years and are quite content making a decent living......they could care less!!!!!!
