Can a convicted felon sell insurance?

Met someone recently who just got out of jail for Tax Evasion and obstruction of justice.

He wants to get into insurance. Is this even possible? Would any company (Medicare and/or Life insurance) appoint him?

E&O might be an issue... among other things.

Can sell and permission to sell are two different critters.

Call up a company and ask a discreet question. Also will a state license him?

apparently he already has a license with the state of florida. He obtained it before he went to jail, and the 48 months with no appointments has not passed yet, so his license has not lapsed.

I know Carriers always ask about credit and such I would think Tax evasion might spook them more than other things

Just a guess though

Did the insurance department know about his incarceration?

That part is not clear to me. It did not come up in conversation.
But since you mention it, I do believe that is a regulation that he must report it to the DOI. What happens if he doesn't is the license revoked?

The issue is more about the E&O, as well as a carriers fine print. Will he be able to answer the questions honestly. If he doesn't then he is a felon X 2.

But the question is does the state relook at your criminal record after your initial license ? I'm pretty sure no . But any company running a background check will see this . And it's very recent . I'm almost certain no medicare company will appoint him .

I think the answer would be "no" but I am certainly not an expert on issues like this, and I've been wrong before. I'm certainly interested to see how this plays out, though.
