Why do shows based in Hawaii or Alaska (James Bond movies too) tend to succeed? Lots of folks tune in just for the scenery!
That, and it is just escapism. For Alaska and the home improvement shows a lot of it is, "I could do that, I'm macho enough, rugged enough, have enough design talent, etc."
I watch the Tour De France every year. Half of it is for the scenery, some beautiful parts of France. At one point NBCSN had a power outage and switched to the Australian commentary, they were even saying as much. "Sorry, just not much in this part of France to show you."
