Maternity Coverage

In GA, over half the births are paid for by the taxpayers via Medicaid. Can't imagine why folks would pay for maternity coverage when they can be irresponsible and let the rest of us pay.

Once the baby is born they get free health care for a year under the PeachCare for Kids plan.

Well for $8 I can convince anyone to get covered and not have to run it through Medicaid. I'm assuming Medicaid isn't picking up the tab when the clients have plenty of income/assets. Also depends on your client base. The clients I'm dealing with aren't exactly looking to Medicaid to get maternity covered. Internet leads? Yep.

Maternity waiting period

Does anyone know of a company that offers maternity with less than a 9 month waiting period or is this the industry standard? Thanks.

Call around to the carriers that write in your state. Most are anywhere from 9 months to 2 years. KP does not have a waiting period. Quite a few of my women who can't wait opt for KP.

Something to consider on the $10,000 ded is the rerate you get from the insurance contracts. When I had my son the hospital charged around $7000 for the rather uneventful birth, but after it was adjusted the bill was around $3000. My point being that even if someone doesn't reach the $10,000 deductible they will still get a good discount on the bill that will more than make up for the premium they spend to get the maternity coverage.

And for the $8 it's worth it just for the protection in case something goes wrong. Premature births are not covered complications of pregnancy on anyone's policy and price up NICU for each day.

I'm sorry, if this is a dumb question- but newbie me, doesn't know what KP is.....So, what's KP?

KP = Kaiser Permanente - they no longer offer maternity coverage on individual policies in CO.
