How do you get the new MBI when enrolling client doesn’t have it?

Can you do it while the customer is in you office with you?

Caveat, not an agent.

You probably can, but .......

Just stop and think for a moment. Suppose the person then, later, has a problem with their account, or something to do with their SS number. You are on the suspect list as a cause.

When I first saw this issue being discussed during AEP, I was thinking like you are, but the more I think about it, in today's world of identity theft and litigation, it seems like a pretty risky thing to do. I suspect you will hear agents say they do it, some will probably have a form for customers to sign as part of their process. I don't think I would recommend it.

It's a tough choice... you want to get things accomplished and "get shit done," but you sure don't want to get in trouble later either.

The SS site:

You can only create an account using your own personal information and for your own exclusive use. You cannot create an account on behalf of another person or using another person's information or identity, even if you have that person's written permission.

For example, you cannot create an account for another person:

  • With whom you have a business relationship;
  • For whom you are a representative payee; or
  • For whom you are an appointed representative.
Only you can use the account that you create with us. You can never share the use of your account with anyone else under any circumstances. You can never use another person's account.

So, I won't be doing that. However, I see no compliance reasons why I can't open and enter a client's Medicare.gov account. Right? (I understand I would need the MBI.)

Shame on you for thinking too much Lost License. Just Say "no" to logging into mymedicare.gv too when you start selling something.....anything

Sounds like something I should have known. Google is my friend.

During the "training" for the new F'd up Plan Finder there was discussion about asking your client to share their MyMedicare login credentials. A definite no-no that can get your butt in a sling.

What you are proposing is, in my opinion, a step beyond "borrowing" their login.

Seems like there are a lot of creative ways to get in trouble and you found one more.

You like living on the edge, don't you.

How badly do you need the sale?

Everyone does things differently. I tell my client how to get their number and let them do it. If they can't get it I put everything on hold until the DO come up with it.

Most of my clients ARE computer literate but that is pretty much a prerequisite if they want me to help them. I don't have time for paper apps, home visits, etc. Too many other folks who can pull their share of the weight to mess around with those who can't get their own Medicare number.

Maybe the govt can splurge for plastic cards one day so they dont throw away the red white and blue marketing looking paper card
